(DON’T) CALL ME CRAZY - MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS THROUGH ART EXHIBIT

(DON’T) CALL ME CRAZY - MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS THROUGH ARThttps://wheretobaguio.tumblr.com/
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and to kick it off at the beginning of May, various women joined together to put up an exhibit entitled “(Don’t) Call Me Crazy” at Fred’s Art Gallery.

The participating artists were Glendale Benzon, Eden Cawang, Donnalee Denis, Rquel Diokno, Ana Patricia Dizon, Freya Jadormio, Tamielt Azrun Kahlil, Femy Dhania Lamsis, Joyce Mallare, Catherine Mapanao, Venus Marie Obinque, Maya Racuya, Sheela “Ming” Tabuno, Gab Talicuad, Kathrina Taylan, China Valdez, Leeyart Villanueva, and Jannelle Willer.

The artists created their own interpretations of different states of mental health. They also showed that art can be an emotional outlet, creating pieces touching on themes such as body positivity, self-reflection, loneliness, grief, and psychosis.

Freya Jadormio writes, “Depression is not a choice. Mental illness, anxiety, bipolar disorder and other mental disorders are not choices. Just like diabetes, skin disease, and eye disease, we all need help. You can’t just snap out of it but there’s a way to get better. Let’s help break the stigma about mental disorders and mental illness. The more we talk about it and make art about it, the more we can raise awareness.”

This exhibit also reminded us that we are not alone and that it is okay to seek help. Until we all see that mental health is a normal part of life that needs to be acknowledged, efforts such as art exhibits and talks are important to spread the word.

FABulous People
“STAY Wild, Moon Child”. Call it a superstition, a myth, man-made, a coincidence and unfounded, does the moon really have an influence on a man’s behavior on a Full Moon? Some may feel the lunar energy give warmth and love and just feel the flow of romance just like in Juan Karlos’ popular song of “Buwan”, all-time favorites like “Moon River” and “Fly Me to the Moon”.

Is it perhaps that others are triggered and influenced into some kind of irrational, “IndiGenius”, creative mental behavior? Does the moonlight really alter our hormonal levels or does the moon’s gravitational forces on ocean tides and water, like that in the “reservoirs” of our brain, send a domino effect of molecular chaos? Why are the werewolves and the egg laying crustaceans at the coastline in sync with the Full Moon? Also, not to mention the significance of the moon in astrology and the practice of fengsui. Does the moon really recharge our precious crystals? Well, there is one thing I am certainly sure of. Just the sight of the Full Moon in its majestic splendor in the night sky, makes us feel one with the Creator, the cosmic forces and the universe. I am also pretty much sure, that the creatives and the lovers in Baguio certainly enjoy and look forward to the next Full Moon! Therefore, happy Full Moon! Happy Romance and cheers to the “IndiGenius” minds! Enjoy all the works of Art and the Love happening simultaneously in the City. May the Almighty Kabunian, bless and keep us till we meet again!

“IBAGTIT Art Exhibit” (Crazy Art). The opening ceremonies held February 8 at Luisa CafĂ©’s 2nd floor with lead organizers Kigao Rosimo and Frank Cimatu, it was a pooling and celebration of the generations, for the love of art in all kinds of media, the meeting of minds of the veterans and young blood, the living icons and those who have gone leaving a legacy, the advocacy on mental health and respect for others regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Moreover, it is a symphony of IndiGenius artworks by Cordilleran artists. The Ibagtit Exhibit will runs till the end of March.

An Interactive Art Exhibit Of Culture: Cordillera Hueniverse At SM City Baguio By: SUNSTAR Newspaper September 30, 2019

SM City Baguio has just concluded the Cordillera Hueniverse event last September 22. This activity is an immersive and interactive art exhibit which has been participated by the mall-goers and visitors together with the artists in creating their own art pieces.
This art exhibit is not only to showcase the art works from the different provinces of the Cordillera but also to encourage the mall-goers to join in the art making processes. This is a way to enlighten the visitors about the history and culture of Cordillera.
The Grand Launch was held at the mall atrium last September 17 with the presence of our local artists; Harvic Dominguez, Eden Cawang, Tam-awan Village artists, and the Baguio Collective Youth Artists together with the SM City Baguio officials and employees.
The University of Baguio Voices Chorale in their Cordilleran traditional costume serenaded the mallgoers at the mall atrium with cultural songs. Also, the University of the Cordilleras SaengyaKasaymembers were dressed in traditional wear that represented the different Cordilleran tribes. They performed the unique dances from all the provinces of the Cordillera while sharing its history to the viewers.
The exhibit had three booths showcasing some of the art works done by our fellow Cordillerans. In the Tinta booth, artists from the Baguio Collective Youth Group used henna dye tattoo with different beautiful designs that varied in sizes inspired by the famous Tattoo artist Whang-od from Kalinga. They offered the tattoo for free to the mallgoers as a way of sharing their God- given talent.
TheHibla Booth presented a world class fashion creations from Harvic Dominguez, a proud Igorot fashion designer. Dominquez has had design pieces worn by celebrities including Catriona Gray, Maine Mendoza, and Marian Rivera.
Dominguez uses hand-woven textiles made by independent weavers which in turn helped the local weaving industry.
Along with the booth, artists of Tam-awan Village showcased their expertise in weaving using a back strap loom. A tradition several years ago, and is still being practiced today in the Cordillera region.
The Habi booth represented the Abra province. Artists from the Baguio Collective Youth Group gave away hand-woven baskets made from bamboo to the mall-goers who participated in the handicraft making with whatever designs they wanted.
The participants, children to adults gathered around and took the time to join on the creative art workshop. SM City Baguio is thankful to all the artists and visitors who joined in the Cordillera Hueniverse art exhibit for their support and participation. This is SM City Baguio’s little way of advocating the preservation of the Cordillera art and culture.
